Conversation guide

Pick the group that matches where you are. A few dates in, the openers and the questions about her people and her past are plenty for an evening. If you’ve been together for a while, start with her week and move to sharing a home or what comes next when you both have the time. If you’re only weeks in, new relationship questions have more first-month options.

Start with her world

Early on, ask about the people and places she talks about most: the friend she quotes, the town she grew up in, the job she has opinions about. Remember the names. Asking later how that friend’s move went shows you listened better than any deep question.

Ask for her version of a shared moment

Once you have some history, you might remember the restaurant while she remembers the walk home. Ask what stood out to her and what you missed. A follow-up such as “What happened just before that?” can help without turning the conversation into an interview.

Talk about support without guessing

When she describes a difficult day, ask whether she wants company, practical help, or space. Don’t assume that listening or fixing is always the right response. Her preference may depend on the situation.

Discuss plans in concrete terms

Questions about living together, money or family can expose different expectations. Say which parts are hopes and which are decisions you’re ready to make. Take one practical area per conversation, and write down what you agree so neither of you has to remember it differently later.

Helpful follow-ups

  • What was that like for you?
  • What did you need then?
  • Is that a hope or something you've decided?
  • What would make that easier now?
  • Do you want my view, or should I just listen?
  • Can we come back to this another day?
