Conversation guide

Keep the stakes small

Use a question that lets both people be silly: an imaginary trip, an unnecessary invention or a meal you would defend against all criticism. Follow the answer with a story rather than a score. There is no need to agree on the best fictional holiday destination.

Let a joke become a plan

If an answer suggests something easy to try, choose a small version for this week. Cook the unfamiliar dish or visit the nearby place, rather than promising a trip you cannot arrange. Stop if teasing becomes uncomfortable. A playful answer is not permission to make that person the joke for the rest of the evening.
