Conversation guide

Pick five or six questions before you sit down, one or two from each group. Take turns going first, and ask one follow-up before you move on. The first three groups work in any year. The last group is for couples who have been together long enough to look back over decades rather than months.

A few ways to use them

  • Over dinner: each of you picks two questions in advance and keeps them a surprise.
  • With photos: scroll through the year’s pictures and stop when one prompts a question from the list.
  • On paper: write your answers with the date and read them together before next year’s anniversary.

For a fuller version of that last idea, the anniversary storytelling playbook shows how to turn the evening into a one-page record of your year. For activities beyond conversation, see these anniversary ideas.

After many years together

The long-marriage questions reach back further, to the day you met, the homes you’ve had and the years that tested you. Old photos or a wedding album help here. When a question touches a hard period, let the person who lived it decide how much to say.

These also suit a milestone like a 25th or 40th. If you want a gift to go with the evening, anniversary gifts by year lists the traditional themes.

If you want questions for an ordinary night rather than an anniversary, try questions for couples.

Helpful follow-ups

  • What do you remember about where we were?
  • What did you feel at the time, and has that changed?
  • Did I know that back then?
  • What would you do the same way again?
  • Who else was part of that?
  • Is there a photo from then we should find?
