In 2027, Easter Sunday falls on March 28 for churches that use the Western calendar and on May 2 for Orthodox churches (US Naval Observatory; Office Holidays).
The egg hunt is the natural moment for these questions. Once the eggs are found, give each child one question from the first group to ask a grandparent or older relative: “Where did the grown-ups hide them when you were little?” Children asking tends to get a livelier answer than an adult asking, and the kids hear a story they can repeat.
At the Easter meal
Save the questions about the meal and family customs for the table. Ask the person who made a dish where the recipe came from, and whether anyone has written it down. If your family has customs from another country or church, the question about your family’s roots is a good one to ask the oldest person there. The cultural heritage workbook has more on recording those.
If church isn’t part of your Easter
Skip the church and Lent questions, or swap in “What did Easter morning look like at your house?” The spring group works for anyone.
For questions that go further into a grandparent’s childhood, see the questions for grandparents. If Easter is one of several traditions you want to write down, our guide to family traditions has ideas for the rest of the year.
