Conversation guide

Date night questions give you something to talk about besides the week’s logistics. The 41 below come in four groups: easy openers for the start of the evening, shared memories, what each of you needs and plans for what comes next. Choose two or three that suit tonight.

Choose the conversation you want

For a relaxed dinner, stay with the first two groups: a kind gesture, a song, a place you both remember. For a planning evening, go to the last group and pick a trip or a routine to talk through. The questions about what each of you needs ask more of both people. Save them for an evening when you both have the energy, and don’t make them the whole date.

Ask one, offer your own answer, and follow the detail that interests you. If it becomes a disagreement, decide together whether to pause or pick it up another day rather than trying to solve it over dinner.

After the evening

If you agree on a plan, make it specific: a meal to cook, a walk to take or a weekend to keep free. Ask before saving a personal answer. The anniversary playbook offers a different format for revisiting shared memories, and the 36 questions to fall in love are a longer, structured exercise if you want one.

Helpful follow-ups

  • Can we plan that now?
